Honda Fireblade. 30 years on.

Four generations of the bike that invented the 1000cc superbike. Same Tadao Baba philosophy of "light is right" — now with 215 horsepower, MotoGP electronics and winglets. Different bike entirely.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Power gain +87bhp 128bhp → 215bhp. The 1996 Fireblade was the most powerful production bike on Earth at launch. The 2026 makes nearly twice as much horsepower for the same job.
Torque change +21Nm 92Nm → 113Nm. The shape of the curve is what changed — modern bikes deliver torque across a wider range, not just at one peak.
Weight gain +18kg 183kg dry → 201kg wet. Add fluids and the gap closes, but the 2026 carries 50bhp/L more in similar packaging. Density per kg, way up.
Real cost change +A$13.1k A$16,600in 1996 = ~A$33,200today. The 2026 SP is A$48,400. So in real terms, the modern one is ~40% more expensive — but you get IMU, winglets, ABS Pro and Akrapovič.
Rider aids count 0 → 7 1996: zero. Carbs, no ABS, no traction, no electronics. 2026: cornering ABS, IMU, slide control, wheelie control, engine braking control, ride modes, two-motor throttle.
Front wheel size 16" → 17" The 1996 Fireblade ran a unique 16" front wheel — Tadao Baba's call for sharper steering. By 2000 Honda gave in and switched to 17" like everyone else. The 16" is now a defining quirk of "real" early Fireblades.
Cheapest way in A$5.8k A clean 1996 Fireblade T/V today. A 30-year-old 128bhp Honda for less than a learner Yamaha MT-03 used. Carb cleaning required, original parts becoming collectible.
