What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Engine config L-twin → V4 The biggest change. From 916 (1994) to 1299 Panigale (2017) Ducati ran an L-twin. The V4 arrived in 2018 and changed the bike's character entirely.
Power gain +106bhp 109bhp 916 → 215bhp Panigale V4 S. Doubled in 30 years. The V4 is now closer to a MotoGP bike than to its 916 ancestor.
Torque change +34Nm 90Nm → 124Nm. Twin to four — completely different shape. Modern V4 spins to 14,000rpm; 916 redlined at 11k.
Real cost change +$7.4k $15,525 in 1996 ≈ $31,050 today. The V4 S is $41,438. About 33% more expensive in real terms — but you go from carbs and analogue clocks to active suspension and winglets.
Rider aids count 0 → 9 1996: zero. 2026: cornering ABS, IMU traction, slide control, wheelie, engine brake, ride modes, riding position memory, launch, pit lane limiter.
What "superbike" means Then vs now In 1996, "Ducati superbike" meant the prettiest, most race-bred road bike on Earth. In 2026, it means MotoGP electronics on the road.
Cheapest way in $13.5k A scruffy 916 today. Mint examples are $24.3k+. The 916 is the only 30-year-old superbike that's actually appreciated since 1996.
