What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Engine config L-twin → V4 The biggest change. From 916 (1994) to 1299 Panigale (2017) Ducati ran an L-twin. The V4 arrived in 2018 and changed the bike's character entirely.
Power gain +106bhp 109bhp 916 → 215bhp Panigale V4 S. Doubled in 30 years. The V4 is now closer to a MotoGP bike than to its 916 ancestor.
Torque change +34Nm 90Nm → 124Nm. Twin to four — completely different shape. Modern V4 spins to 14,000rpm; 916 redlined at 11k.
Real cost change +£5.5k £11,500 in 1996 ≈ £23,000 today. The V4 S is £30,695. About 33% more expensive in real terms — but you go from carbs and analogue clocks to active suspension and winglets.

What "superbike" means Then vs now In 1996, "Ducati superbike" meant the prettiest, most race-bred road bike on Earth. In 2026, it means MotoGP electronics on the road.
Cheapest way in £10k A scruffy 916 today. Mint examples are £18k+. The 916 is the only 30-year-old superbike that's actually appreciated since 1996.
