Heavy adventure bikes are the SUVs of the motorcycle world — aspirational, comfortable, capable of more than most owners ask of them, and quietly the biggest segment in the market.

The deal: huge tank, upright comfort, electronic everything, panniers ready, 130+ bhp with deep torque, all-day weather protection. The cost: 250+ kg fully loaded and a seat height that excludes shorter riders. BMW's GS owns the category by a wide margin; the rest are taking pieces of that pie one feature at a time.
