Honda Africa Twin. 30 years on.

Honda's flagship adventure bike. The 1996 and 2006 columns are sub-1000cc — the original Africa Twin was a 742cc V-twin and stayed that capacity for its entire 1988-2003 run. The CRF1000L brought it back as a true heavyweight in 2016.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Power gain +41bhp 60bhp → 101bhp. The original Africa Twin made very modest power for its size — its Dakar heritage was about reliability and capability, not horsepower. The modern one is 70% more powerful.
Torque gain +50Nm 62Nm → 112Nm. Almost double the torque. Bigger engine, modern fuel injection, and the parallel twin layout helps low-end grunt.
Weight gain +48kg 205kg dry → 253kg wet. The modern AS trim is significantly heavier — bigger fuel tank (24L), more electronics, full fairing.
Real cost change +£3.5k £6,500 in 1996 ≈ £13,000 today. The 2026 AS ES is £16,499. About 27% more expensive in real terms — but you go from carbs and round headlights to Apple CarPlay, cornering ABS, electronic suspension and a 24L tank.
Rider aids count 0 → 8 1996: nothing. 2026: cornering ABS, traction control, ride modes, cruise, hill control, lift control, slide control, smartphone connectivity.
Production gap 13 years Honda killed the original Africa Twin in 2003 and didn't make another until the CRF1000L in 2016. For 13 years, if you wanted a Honda heavyweight ADV, the answer was 'we don't make one'.
Cheapest way in £3.5k A clean 1996 XRV750 today. The bike that won four Paris-Dakars in the 80s — for less than a 125 commuter. Now collectible — prices rising fast.
