BMW C400 GT. The maxi-scooter the press forgot.

Launched 2018, the BMW C400 GT is BMW's premium mid-size maxi-scooter — and the subject of Ross's most-viewed YouTube video. 33.6bhp from a 350cc single, 204kg wet, 775mm seat — A2-licence compliant out the box, electric screen, Smart Key, TFT optional. £8,755 OTR for 2026. Premium-priced (Forza 350 £6,499, XMAX 300 £6,810) — but uniquely, it's BMW's only sub-£10k bike on UK sale, and the only mid-size maxi with adjustable rear suspension preload as standard. 30 years ago BMW didn't make scooters. The C-series launched 2012 (C600 Sport / C650 GT), C400 followed 2018.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Ross's most-viewed YouTube video Channel flagship The BMW C400 GT is the subject of Ross's most-viewed YouTube video on the Ross Rides channel — a long-form review covering ergonomics, real-world commute footage, and side-by-side comparison with the Forza 350. The video remains the top-performer years after publication; if you've found this page it's probably because you watched that video first.
BMW didn't make scooters until 2012 Late entrant BMW Motorrad has been making motorcycles since 1923. The first BMW scooter — the C1 (2000-2003) — was a 125cc roofed urban experiment that didn't sell. BMW's first 'real' maxi-scooter was the C600 Sport / C650 GT in 2012. The C400 X / C400 GT followed in 2018 to fill the mid-size gap. BMW is the latest major brand to enter the maxi-scooter space — and arguably has the most cohesive premium offering as a result.
Adjustable rear preload — class first Single-turn knob C400 GT has rear suspension preload that's adjustable via a knob (no tools, no spanners). Honda Forza 350 has none. Yamaha XMAX 300 needs a C-spanner. BMW Vespa GTS 300 has none. For a commuter who occasionally takes a pillion, this is a useful feature — adjust 30 seconds before pulling away. Class-leading practicality.
Flexcase underseat storage Two helmets, vertically BMW's 'Flexcase' is a fold-out underseat storage system that takes two full-face helmets vertically — 30L expanded, 60L stowed. Forza 350 takes two helmets but you fight the geometry; XMAX takes one comfortably. C400 GT swallows two without thinking. Underrated practical advantage.
33.6bhp — most powerful in segment vs 28.8 (Forza), 27.6 (XMAX) C400 GT makes 33.6bhp from 350cc — the most powerful single-cylinder maxi-scooter in its class. Forza 350 (28.8bhp), XMAX 300 (27.6bhp), GTS 300 (23.6bhp) all fall short. Real-world: C400 GT will reach an indicated 100mph; rivals top out at 90-95mph. Useful margin for two-up motorway riding.
TFT cost £550 option Standard C400 GT dash is LCD. The 6.5in TFT with BMW Connectivity (turn-by-turn, Bluetooth, music) is a £550 option. Forza 350 and XMAX 300 include TFT or smartphone-compatible LCD as standard. BMW pricing strategy: lower headline price, charge for the kit you'd actually want.
Why the press largely ignored it BMW timing + niche segment Launched 2018, just before global press attention shifted to electric scooters (BMW CE 04 launched 2021). Mid-size maxi-scooter segment is small in UK volume vs Italy/Spain/Germany. UK motorcycle press treated the C400 GT as a footnote vs Forza 350. Ross's video has out-performed almost any UK media coverage of the bike — partly because it filled a genuine information gap.
Real cost of ownership ~£1,200/year Insurance group 13. Realistic UK fully-comp ~£280-£350/year for a 30+ rider. 65-70mpg real-world. Service intervals 6,000 miles, BMW prices ~£250-£350 per service. Realistic annual cost (insurance + tax + service + tyres + fuel for 5,000 miles): ~£1,100-£1,200. Materially more than Forza 350 (~£800-£900) — but closer to the Forza than to a TMAX 560.
