What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
First-ever liquid-cooled RE Sherpa 450 engine The Sherpa 450 engine is RE's first liquid-cooled motor — a major milestone after 90+ years of air-cooled singles. 452cc DOHC, 4-valve, ride-by-wire, twin-spark. Forms the basis of the new Guerrilla 450 (UK 2025) too.
21-inch front wheel — proper ADV geometry Real off-road kit The 21in front / 17in rear setup is rare at this price point — even Honda CB500X uses 19/17. The 21in front is what makes the Himalayan a real off-road bike, not a styled-up commuter. Long-travel suspension (200mm front, 200mm rear) backs it up.
Adjustable seat 805-845mm Two settings without tools The seat has a built-in dual-position mount: low (805mm) and high (845mm). Rider switches without tools in 30 seconds. Class-leading flexibility for an ADV under A$11.7k.
First-gen Himalayan was a flop initially 2016-2018 quality issues First-gen 411s sold abroad had quality problems — fuel pump failures, electrical issues, soft suspension. RE pulled UK sales 2017-2018 to fix recalls. 2019+ versions much improved. The 450 platform was a clean-sheet redesign.
US: $5,799 starting Cheapest serious mid-ADV RE USA sells the Himalayan 450 for $5,799 — undercutting Honda CB500X ($7,099), Kawasaki KLR650 ($6,899) and KTM 390 Adventure ($7,499). For US buyers wanting a real 21in ADV under $6k it's the only option.
Adventure-tuned, not road-tuned 40bhp at 8,000rpm The Sherpa 450 makes peak 40bhp at 8,000rpm — relatively high-revving for an ADV. Torque peak is 40Nm at 5,500rpm. On road it feels lively but high-strung; off road, the rev range works well for technical riding.
