Kawasaki ZX-10R. 30 years on.

Kawasaki's open-class sport bike across three decades. The ZX-10R didn't exist in 1996 — the ZX-9R was its precursor. Spiritual successor for the 1996 column.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Power gain +61bhp 139bhp ZX-9R → 200bhp ZX-10R. Most of that came in the 2004 ZX-10R launch — Kawasaki's first proper litre-class sport bike outgunned the 9R immediately by 35bhp.
Torque change +13Nm 102Nm → 115Nm. The 2006 model already had basically modern torque numbers.
Weight loss → gain −8 then back The 2006 ZX-10R was 40kg lighter than the 1996 ZX-9R (175 dry vs 215 dry). Then weight crept back up with electronics and emissions to 207kg wet.
Real cost change −$0.5k $11,070 in 1996 ≈ $22,140 today. The 2026 ZX-10R is $21,599 — slightly cheaper in real terms. Major aero update for 2026 with new winglets and Euro5+ compliance (193bhp, down from 200bhp). For a bike that won six WSBK titles between 2015 and 2021.
Rider aids count 0 → 8 1996: zero. 2026: cornering ABS, IMU traction, launch control, engine braking, ride modes, quickshifter, slide control, wheelie control.
Aerodynamics None → Winglets In 1996, "aero" meant the fairing held the bodywork on. Today it means downforce-generating winglets that reduce wheelies and increase stability over 200kph.
Cheapest way in $2.7k A clean 1996 ZX-9R B1 today. The Ninja that took on the Fireblade and lost — now severely undervalued because of that.
