What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Power gain +19bhp 48bhp KLE500 → 67bhp Versys 650. The lineage moved from a 498cc to a 649cc parallel twin in 2007 (with the Versys launch) and has stayed there for nearly two decades.
Torque gain +15Nm 46Nm → 61Nm. Mostly from the 150cc capacity increase between KLE500 and Versys 650.
Weight gain +38kg 180kg dry → 218kg wet. Like-for-like the modern Versys is roughly 20kg heavier — bigger fairing, more electronics, ABS hardware, larger fuel tank.
Real cost change −$1.6k $4,800 in 1996 ≈ $9,600 today. The 2026 Versys is $8,099 — about 16% cheaper in real terms. Kawasaki have kept the Versys 650 honest on price.
Rider aids count 0 → 5 1996: nothing. 2026: ABS, traction control, quickshifter, smartphone, TFT. The Versys 650 hit its electronics ceiling early and has stayed there.
Update frequency Glacial The Versys 650 has had three meaningful updates in 18 years (2010, 2015, 2022) and they've all been styling refreshes plus minor tech additions. Kawasaki found a winning formula and just keeps shipping it.
Cheapest way in $1.2k A clean 1996 KLE500 today. 498cc Kawasaki parallel twin all-rounder for less than a 125 commuter. Indestructible, simple, and Kawasaki's first proper attempt at a do-everything middleweight.
