Boxer → Inline four
The R1100R was a boxer twin (BMW signature engine since 1923). The K1200R was a transverse inline four. The S 1000 R is a longitudinal inline four (S 1000 RR derived). BMW big naked has gone through three different engine layouts in 30 years.

80bhp R1100R → 170bhp S 1000 R. More than doubled. Going from low-revving boxer to a 12,000rpm superbike-derived inline four. Modern bike makes nearly twice the power with 86cc less capacity.

What started the hyper-naked era
K1200R 2005
BMW launched the K1200R in 2005 — 163bhp from a transverse four, claimed to be the most powerful naked motorcycle in the world at launch. Six years before the Tuono V4 and the proper hyper-naked era. The K1200R was ahead of its time and looked weird, which is why most people remember the Tuono V4 as the first.
