30-Year Arcs / ADV / BMW F-GS Lineage
BMW Germany

BMW F-GS. 30 years on.

BMW's middleweight GS. Engine layout completely changed mid-lineage — the F650 Funduro (1996) was a single, the F800GS (2008+) became a Rotax-built parallel twin. The F900GS continues the parallel twin concept today.

// 30-Year Delta

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Power gain +57bhp 48bhp → 105bhp. More than doubled. Going from a single-cylinder Rotax to an 895cc parallel twin made all the difference.
Engine config Single → Twin Two distinct architectures across the 30-year span. Single-cylinder Funduro through to 2008, then the Rotax-built parallel twin from F800GS onwards. Different bike entirely.
Weight loss −10kg The F900GS is 10kg LIGHTER than the F800GS that preceded it (219kg vs 229kg wet). BMW went on a serious weight-loss programme for 2024.
Real cost change +$1.1k $5,500 in 1996 ≈ $11,000 today. The 2026 F900GS is $13,895 base — about 10% more in real terms. Premium bought IMU electronics, ride-by-wire, cornering ABS, twin-cylinder grunt and a 10kg weight loss vs the F800GS.
Rider aids count 0 → 7 1996: nothing. 2026: cornering ABS Pro, traction control, ride modes, quickshifter, hill control, dynamic brake control, lift control.
Where it was made Italy (Aprilia) The 1996 F650 Funduro wasn't even built by BMW — it was built in Italy by Aprilia under contract, with a Rotax engine. 'BMW' branding on a thoroughly multinational motorcycle.
Cheapest way in $1.5k A clean 1996 F650 Funduro today. The bike that introduced single-cylinder middleweight ADV to BMW's range — for less than a 125 commuter.
