Ducati 1098 / 1198. The last V-twin superbike before Panigale — and many say still the best.

Ducati's 2007 1098 was the model that killed the 999. Trellis frame, single-sided swingarm, 1098cc Testastretta L-twin, 160bhp. Updated to 1198cc 2009. Killed 2011 — replaced by 1199 Panigale (V-twin) which itself gave way to the V4.

What actually changed.

916 → 999 → 1098 → 1199 Each replaced its predecessor 916 (1994-98) → 996 (1999-2002) → 998 (2002-04) → 999 (2003-06) → 1098 (2007-08) → 1198 (2009-11) → 1199 Panigale (2012-14) → 1299 (2015-17) → Panigale V4 (2018+). The V-twin lineage ran 1994-2014; V4 since 2018. Each generation defined Ducati's superbike DNA.
Why is the 1098 mythologised? Best V-twin Ducati Many enthusiasts consider the 1098 Ducati's peak V-twin superbike. Lighter than 999 (171kg dry vs 199kg), prettier (Tamburini-influenced styling restored), more powerful (160bhp), single-sided swingarm. The 1199 Panigale that replaced it was lighter still but lost the trellis frame for monocoque, dividing fans.
vs modern Panigale V4 Different engine architecture Panigale V4 ($25,995, 1103cc V4 215bhp): completely different engine. 1098 (final $15k, 1098cc V-twin 160bhp): traditional Ducati architecture. V4 is faster but the V-twin character is gone. Some still buy used 1098s for the character.
Real cost trajectory (final 1198) Strong used residuals 1198 (2009-11) used market $8-13k for a tidy one in 2026. Not depreciating — appreciating in some cases. Cult status, last V-twin Ducati superbike, getting rarer. Best examples $15k+ now.
Cheapest way in $6,000 (used 999 or early 1098) A clean 999 (2003-2006) is the cheapest path to V-twin Ducati superbike — $6-10k. Watch cam belts (12k miles), reg/rec, fuel pump. 1098/1198 are $8-15k for tidy examples.
Rider aids count (1996 → 2011) 1 → 3 916 had only FI. 1198 SP had FI, Ducati Traction Control (DTC), and Brembo radial brakes — but no ride modes, no IMU. Compared to a 2026 Panigale V4 (cornering ABS, DTC EVO, IMU, 8 ride modes), even the 1198 SP is sparse.
