The XDiavel launched in 2016 — Ducati attempt at a more traditional cruiser positioning, with feet-forward riding position. 1996, 2006 = no Ducati cruiser; 2016 = first-gen XDiavel (V-twin); 2026 = XDiavel V4. Aggressive American-cruiser stance combined with Ducati performance. Ducati feet-forward variation on the Diavel formula.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
XDiavel vs Diavel Feet position The XDiavel and Diavel share the same engine, frame and most components. The key difference is rider position: Diavel = mid-mount foot pegs (sport-bike position), XDiavel = forward-mount foot pegs (American cruiser position). XDiavel is the more traditional cruiser-positioned bike; the Diavel is the more sport-naked-positioned bike. Same DNA, two stances.
Engine architecture L-twin → V4 The original XDiavel S (2016-2024) used the Testastretta DVT L-twin (1262cc, with variable valve timing). The XDiavel V4 (2025+) uses the Granturismo V4 from the Multistrada V4. Same V4 redesign as the Diavel V4 — moving away from V-twin to V4 across the Ducati range.
Power gain (1st gen → V4) +12bhp 156bhp XDiavel S → 168bhp XDiavel V4. The V4 makes more peak power and adds modern features — radar adaptive cruise control, more sophisticated electronics, smoother power delivery. Same approach as the Diavel V4 update.
Real cost change +£3.8k Original XDiavel S was £17,500 in 2016 (£22,750 today). XDiavel V4 is £26,595 — about 17% more in real terms. Modest premium reflecting V4 motor and radar adaptive cruise additions.
Belt drive Ducati cruiser convention The XDiavel uses belt final drive — first time Ducati had used belt on a production motorcycle. Belt drive is the cruiser convention (Harley, Indian, Honda Rebel all use belts). The Diavel uses chain drive (sport-bike convention). The belt vs chain choice reinforces the XDiavel cruiser positioning.
Weight similar to Diavel +7kg 247kg wet XDiavel S → 243kg wet XDiavel V4. About 7kg heavier than the Diavel V4 (236kg) — partly the belt drive housing, partly the longer wheelbase for cruiser geometry. Both bikes are remarkably light for their category.
Cheapest way in £10k A clean XDiavel S from 2016-2020. The V-twin XDiavel — Testastretta DVT motor, characterful, much cheaper on the used market than new. Genuine Ducati cruiser experience for less than half the new V4 price.
