The bike that knocked the Fireblade off its throne. Four generations of Yamaha's 1000cc supersport — from the 1996 Thunderace to the crossplane MotoGP-derived monster sold today. The R1 didn't exist in 1996 — so we start with what Yamaha sold instead.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Power gain +52bhp 145bhp → 197bhp. The Thunderace was already supercar-fast. The current R1 is faster than most supercars.
Torque change +4Nm 108Nm to 112Nm in 30 years. Big-bore 5-valve to crossplane four — peak torque barely moved.
Weight change +3kg Honest weight is barely up. Like-for-like, the modern R1 is several kg heavier.
Real cost change +£2.8k £8,000 in 1996 ≈ £16,000 today. The 2026 R1 is £18,820 — but only as a track-only bike. From 2025 Yamaha withdrew the R1 from European road sales because it cannot meet Euro 5+ emissions; UK dealers (Crescent, Padgett's) sell it only as the "R1 RACE" / "R1 GYTR" variants for circuit use.

Road legality Yes → No (EU) The 2026 R1 is sold as a track-only bike in Europe due to Euro5+ regs. Yamaha couldn't make the crossplane meet emissions on the road. Brutal moment.
Cheapest way in £3k A clean 2006 5VY R1 today. 180bhp inline four for the price of a 125. Probably the most underpriced superbike on the UK used market right now.
