Yamaha BT1100 Bulldog. The cruiser-engined naked that nobody knew they needed.

Yamaha's 2002 BT1100 Bulldog took the XV1100 Virago's air-cooled 75° V-twin and put it in a naked roadster chassis — upright bars, no fairing, 65bhp at peak. The original 'cruiser-naked' before the term existed. Killed 2007 with no successor. Cult bike on UK used market.

What actually changed.

Yamaha's air-cooled V-twin naked · 2002-2007
Original 'cruiser-naked' 2002 reset BT1100 Bulldog took a cruiser engine (XV1100 Virago) and put it in a naked roadster chassis — modern style, traditional engine. Created the 'cruiser-naked' template before the term existed. Honda CB1100 (2010), Yamaha Bolt (2013), Triumph Speedmaster all followed similar formulas.
Why it ended 2007 Euro 3 + tepid sales Euro 3 emissions in 2006 required updates that Yamaha wouldn't fund for the low-volume Bulldog. UK sales were always small — riders who wanted V-twin naked went to Suzuki SV1000 (more power) or Triumph Speedmaster (more cruiser). Bulldog occupied an awkward middle ground.
Real cost trajectory −25% real £6,899 Bulldog in 2006 (£11,600 today). Used market 2026: £1.8-3.5k clean. The cheapest air-cooled V-twin naked you can buy. Pay attention to carb sync, reg/rec, belt wear. Properly undervalued.
vs MT-09 in 2026 Different character MT-09 (890cc CP3 triple, 117bhp): modern, electronic, sharp. BT1100 (1063cc V-twin, 65bhp): traditional, analogue, torque-focused. Different riders entirely. Bulldog is for V-twin character lovers; MT-09 is for modern naked sport.
Rider aids count 0 BT1100 had nothing — analogue dials, carb-fed, no electronics. Pure 2002-era simplicity.
Cheapest way in £1.8k A clean Bulldog from 2003-2005. 65bhp air-cooled V-twin, naked roadster style, that classic torque-focused character. Pay attention to carb sync, reg/rec, final drive belt wear, fork seals. Bombproof Virago engine.
Why riders miss it Air-cooled simplicity Air-cooled engines are essentially extinct in 2026 (Honda CB1100 gone 2020, Yamaha XJR1300 gone 2017, Suzuki Bandit air-cooled gone 2007). The Bulldog was the cheapest air-cooled V-twin naked when new and remains the cheapest used. Cult following among air-cooled enthusiasts.
