Moto Guzzi V7. 30 years on.

The V7 is one of the longest-running model names in motorcycling — V7 Sport in 1971, V7 Special in 1996. The modern V7 lineage is unbroken since 2009, when Guzzi revived the badge as the V7 Classic. Same transverse V-twin, same shaft drive, same character.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Power change Static for 25 years From 1996 to 2020 the V7 made 48bhp. Twenty-five years of basically the same engine output. Then in 2021 Guzzi finally bumped capacity to 853cc and power to 65bhp. The V7 may be the most consistent power figure in modern motorcycling.
Engine architecture Transverse V-twin throughout Every V7 from 1971 to 2026 has had the same transverse-mounted 90° V-twin layout — air-cooled, longitudinal crank, shaft drive. No other manufacturer makes anything like it. The V7 is mechanically a 1970s motorcycle with modern electronics.
Weight gain +32kg 186kg dry → 218kg wet. Modern bike heavier — but the architecture is so simple the gain is mostly emissions kit and ABS hardware.
Real cost change −$0.7k $6,075 in 1996 was about $12,150 in todays money. The 2026 V7 Stone is $11,468 — about 6% cheaper in real terms. Guzzi priced the V7 honestly throughout its history.
Capacity finally grew 744 → 853cc For 50 years the V7 was 744cc. In 2021 Guzzi finally bumped it to 853cc — using the engine from the V85 TT. That is the biggest change to the V7 in two generations of riders.
What heritage means here Genuine, not costume Unlike the Z900RS (modern engine, retro costume) or XSR900 (MT-09 in disguise), the V7 is mechanically genuine — same engine layout, same shaft drive, same upright riding position as 1971. The heritage is real, not styling.
Cheapest way in $4.1k A clean Breva 750 from 2006. Same V7 engine, slightly different bodywork, much cheaper than even early modern V7s.
