Same engine as Gold Star
Cost-efficient
The Scrambler 650 uses the identical 652cc liquid-cooled DOHC single as the Gold Star — same 45bhp, same 55Nm. BSA's strategy is component sharing: one engine, one frame architecture, two body styles. Cost-efficient way to expand the range without massive R&D investment.
Different ergonomics
Posture / wheels / travel
The Scrambler 650 differs from the Gold Star in: handlebar width and rise, footpeg position, fuel tank shape, seat shape, suspension travel (longer), front wheel size (19in vs 18in), tyres (more aggressive block pattern). Same engine inside; different bike experience.
Aimed at Royal Enfield Bear 650
Pricing
BSA priced the Scrambler 650 at £5,999 — undercutting the Royal Enfield Bear 650 (£6,749 base, £6,949 'Two Four Nine' edition). Triumph Scrambler 400X is £5,295 but smaller. BSA is positioned right in the middle of the segment — bigger than Triumph 400, cheaper than Royal Enfield 650.
Not actually off-road capable
Soft-roader
Despite the styling, the Scrambler 650 has no proper off-road capability. Cast wheels rather than spoked tubeless, road-biased tyres (with light dirt tread), no skid plate, no off-road riding modes, no switchable ABS. It's a road bike with scrambler styling — comfortable for unsealed lanes and gravel tracks, but not for actual trail riding. Same approach as Triumph Scrambler 1200 XC, just much less capable.
Quiet launch
Marketing
The Scrambler 650 was launched without major fanfare — appeared at Motorcycle Live November 2024, on sale September 2025. Unlike Norton's Manx R or Triumph's TF 250-X dirt bike, BSA didn't run a big PR campaign. Fits the brand's low-key positioning: cheap, characterful, available — not aspirational halo-product.
Two BSA bikes in production
Brand maturity
By late 2025, BSA has two production motorcycles: Gold Star 650 (since 2022) and Scrambler 650 (since 2025). The Bantam 350 launched September 2025 makes three. BSA has gone from a dormant trademark in 2016 to a three-bike range in 9 years — Mahindra is patient money, but the range is finally taking shape.
Where it sits
Affordable retro scrambler
The Scrambler 650 is for buyers who like the scrambler aesthetic, want a 650cc single (rather than a Triumph twin), and value affordability over outright capability. Closest direct rivals: Royal Enfield Bear 650, Triumph Scrambler 900 (Speed Twin 900 frame). Closest in price: Triumph Scrambler 400X (£5,295). Niche but real.
