Refined, then killed
26 years of slow Evolution-engine refinement. ABS came 2014, FI came 2007, low seat got better. Same 883cc air-cooled twin throughout. Killed 2022 — replaced by Sportster S (liquid-cooled Revolution Max 1250).
Why was it killed?
Emissions + Sportster S
Air-cooled Evo couldn't meet Euro 5+ emissions. Harley pivoted the Sportster line entirely to the Revolution Max liquid-cooled platform (Sportster S, Nightster). Iron 883 was a casualty. The 883 air-cooled Sportster nameplate is dead after 50+ years.
vs Honda Rebel 1100
Direct rival (modern)
Rebel 1100 (£10,999, 1084cc parallel-twin 86bhp): more power, modern, similar money. Iron 883 (final £9,495, 51bhp): less power, V-twin character, dead now. Rebel 1100 is what Iron 883 buyers cross-shopped.
vs Sportster S (successor)
+£6,000 for liquid-cooled
Sportster S (£15,495, 1252cc Rev Max 121bhp): liquid-cooled, modern, more power. Iron 883 (final £9,495, 51bhp): air-cooled, dead. Sportster S is a much more capable bike but at much more money — and it's not really an entry Sportster anymore.

1996 Hugger £12,400 in today's money. 2022 final Iron 883 £9,495 — slightly cheaper in real terms. Used Iron 883s are excellent value (£5.5-7.5k for a clean one).
Cheapest way in
£3,000 (used 2002-2008)
A clean 2002-2008 XL883C is the cheapest path. £4-6.5k for a tidy one. Iron 883 (2009-2022) is £5.5-9k. Watch cam chain tensioner, reg/rec — common across all Sportster Evos.
