30-Year Arcs / Supermotos / Ducati Hypermotard V2 Lineage
Ducati Italy

Ducati Hypermotard V2. 20 years on, the supermotard finally lost weight.

The Hypermotard has been Ducati's rowdy supermoto since 2007 — Pierre Terblanche's high-bar, narrow-tank, single-sided fun bike. The V2 platform replaces the 937cc Testastretta for 2026 — 13kg lighter, 6bhp more, sharper electronics. The 698 Mono is the smaller sibling (separate lineage page). 880mm seat is for tall riders only.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
13kg lighter than 939 / 950 178kg vs 204kg wet The new 890cc V2 engine is 14.4kg lighter than the 937cc Testastretta it replaces. Plus the new monocoque chassis. Net 13kg saving — the Hypermotard V2 now matches the KTM 990 Duke in weight, finally.
120bhp vs 114bhp from 939 Power UP, weight DOWN Most engine generation changes trade weight for power, or vice versa. The V2 manages both: +6bhp peak, -13kg curb. Power-to-weight ratio jumps from ~559bhp/tonne to ~674bhp/tonne — class-leading.
First Hypermotard without desmo valves Spring valves Ducati's signature desmodromic valve system is gone for the first time on a Hypermotard. Same change as the Panigale V2. Lighter, simpler, cheaper to service. Service intervals jump from 18,000km to 30,000km.
Tank holds 12.5L — small for any class 143 miles max range The V2's small tank is a deliberate weight-saving choice but means real-world fuel stops every 100 miles. Triumph Speed Triple has 15.5L. KTM 990 Duke 14L. If touring matters, this isn't your bike.
Service costs cut roughly in half 30,000km valve checks The 939 needed cambelt and valve checks every 18,000km (~£600 at dealer). V2 needs valve checks every 30,000km (~£300 at dealer) and no cambelt. Real running-cost reduction over 4-year ownership.
Price under £14k for a 120bhp Ducati £13,495 OTR The Hypermotard V2 is now the cheapest 120bhp+ Ducati you can buy. Cheaper than the Panigale V2, cheaper than the Streetfighter V2, cheaper than the Monster Plus. Entry point to the V2 platform.
