Kawasaki ZRX1100 / ZRX1200R. The retro muscle-naked four.

Kawasaki's 1997 ZRX1100 was the retro muscle naked — 1052cc inline-four (ZX-11 derived), twin-shock styling, naked roadster bodywork. 2001 ZRX1200R bumped capacity to 1164cc and 130bhp. Killed 2008 with the death of the muscle-naked-four category. Cult bike now — Z900RS is the modern equivalent in spirit but with sharper styling.

What actually changed.

Kawasaki's retro muscle naked · 1997-2008
Retro muscle-naked-four era 1997-2008 Kawasaki ZRX1100/1200, Yamaha XJR1300, Honda CB1100, Suzuki Bandit 1200 — the retro muscle-naked-four class peaked 1997-2010. By 2026 most are dead (XJR gone 2017, CB1100 gone 2020, Bandit 1200 gone 2007). Z900RS (Kawasaki) is the modern survivor with parallel-twin technology hidden under retro bodywork.
ZRX1100 → ZRX1200R +112cc, 2001 1997-2000 ZRX1100: 1052cc, 96bhp at rear wheel (Wikipedia rated). 2001-2008 ZRX1200R: 1164cc, 120bhp claimed at crank, sharper chassis. Same retro twin-shock styling. ZRX1200R is the buy on used market — better engine, sharper handling, more torque.
Why it ended 2008 Euro 3 + market shift Euro 3 emissions in 2006+ would have required engine update Kawasaki chose not to fund. Combined with declining muscle-naked sales (riders moved to adventure bikes), ZRX1200R was killed in 2008. Same fate as Yamaha XJR1300 (2017), Honda CB1100 (2020), Suzuki Bandit 1200 (2007).
vs Z900RS in 2026 Different generation Z900RS (948cc, 110bhp, 215kg wet, full electronics): modern, sharp, electronic. ZRX1200R (1164cc, 120bhp, 222kg dry, no electronics): traditional, analogue, raw. Same retro vibe, different feel. Z900RS has cornering ABS, TC, ride modes — totally different generation.
Real cost trajectory −15% real (vs Z900RS) £7,799 ZRX1200R in 2006 (£13,100 today) → £11,099 Z900RS in 2026. Slight real-terms decrease. Modern bike has more rider aids. Used market in 2026: ZRX1100 £2.5-4k, ZRX1200R £3.5-5.5k for clean low-mile.
Rider aids count 0-1 ZRX1100 had nothing. ZRX1200R added FI from 2007, but no ABS, no TC, no electronics. Pure 1990s/2000s retro experience. Modern Z900RS has cornering ABS, TC, ride modes, full LCD — different generation.
Cheapest way in £2.5k A clean ZRX1100 from 1997-2000. 96bhp at rear wheel (Wikipedia), retro twin-shock styling, naked roadster, that classic 1990s muscle-naked feel. Pay attention to carb sync, reg/rec, cam chain tensioner. ZRX1200R is the better bike — pay £1k more for clean used.
