The Chief is the flagship
Always has been
The Indian Chief has been Indian flagship since 1922. The original Chief was the Cadillac of motorcycles — biggest engine, most chrome, longest fenders. Modern Chief continues that flagship positioning — Polaris-era Indian uses the Chief as the visible top-of-range bike.
Engine architecture
V-twin throughout
Every Chief has been a V-twin. The original 1922 Chief had an 1100cc V-twin. The modern Chief has the Thunderstroke 116 — a 1890cc V-twin built specifically for the Polaris-era Indian. Designed in Iowa USA and tuned to deliver classic Indian character — long-stroke, low-revving, torque-rich.
Why this lineage works
Proper modern engineering
When Polaris revived the Chief in 2014, they did not just rebadge a Victory bike. They commissioned the Thunder Stroke V-twin specifically for Indian, designed the Chief silhouette from scratch, kept enough vintage cues (longest fender, Indian script badge, classic colour palette) to honour the heritage while building a fundamentally modern motorcycle.
Real cost change
−£6.4k
2016 Chief Classic was £17,500 (£22,750 today). The 2026 Chief Dark Horse is £16,355 — about 28% cheaper in real terms. Indian has dropped the Chief flagship price aggressively since the 2022 redesign. As of February 2026 Indian also split from Polaris (sold majority stake to Carolwood LP private equity), beginning a new chapter as a standalone brand for the first time since Polaris's 2011 revival.
Weight loss (2022 redesign)
−57kg
362kg wet 2016 Chief Classic → 305kg wet 2022+ Chief Dark Horse. Massive weight loss from the 2022 redesign — new lighter chassis, less chrome, Dark Horse trim deletes touring bodywork. The modern Chief is genuinely more agile than its predecessor.
Power gain
+7bhp
92bhp Thunder Stroke 111 → 99bhp Thunderstroke 116. Modest gain from the bigger engine. Indian deliberately kept the power output cruiser-appropriate — torque is the metric that matters for the Chief mission.
Cheapest way in
£10k
A clean Polaris-era Chief from 2014-2020. The Thunder Stroke 111 generation, before the 2022 redesign. Built quality is excellent (Polaris parent company), modern electronics, classic Chief silhouette. Probably the cheapest way to put a real Indian Chief in your garage in 2026.
