Harley-Davidson Nightster. The Sportster name reborn — liquid-cooled, modern, accessible.

Launched 2022, the Nightster carries the spirit of the discontinued air-cooled Sportster forward with a liquid-cooled Revolution Max 975T V-twin (91bhp), 218kg wet, low 688mm seat, £12,495 UK. Light, low, modern Sportster-style cruiser. Companion model: Nightster Special £14,995 (mini fairing, 4in TFT, cruise control, riser bars). The first Sportster successor that doesn't feel like a compromise.

What actually changed.

1996 → 2026 · 30 years of "progress"
Air-cooled Sportster killed 2021, Nightster reborn 2022 Same DNA, different engine The air-cooled Sportster (1957-2021) was a continuous 64-year production run — one of the longest in motorcycle history. Killed by Euro 5 emissions in EU; survived briefly in US until 2021 globally. Nightster (2022) revived the spirit — low, light, accessible cruiser — with the Revolution Max 975T liquid-cooled engine. The name 'Nightster' itself dates to 2007 air-cooled Sportster XL1200N.
Liquid-cooled = lighter, quicker, smoother 218kg vs 256kg, 91bhp vs 67bhp The Revolution Max 975T is 38kg lighter than the old Evolution 1200 in the air-cooled Iron 1200 — and makes 91bhp vs 66bhp (35% more power). Compression ratio jumped from 9.7:1 to 12:1. Compact DOHC architecture allows the rider triangle to be more relaxed despite the smaller wheelbase.
688mm seat — one of the lowest production cruiser seats Sub-700mm without aftermarket The Nightster has a 688mm (27.1") seat as standard. By comparison: Honda Rebel 1100 (700mm), Yamaha Bolt R-Spec (690mm), Indian Scout Bobber (649mm). It's specifically aimed at riders who want low ergonomics without aftermarket seat surgery. Big factor in attracting first-time-Harley buyers, especially shorter riders and women.
Variable valve timing on the intake Modern emissions tech in a Sportster The Revolution Max 975T uses VVT (variable valve timing) on the intake camshaft only — gives strong low-end torque AND clean Euro 5+ compliance. Older Sportsters used a single fixed cam profile and struggled to meet emissions. Modern VVT is what allowed Harley to keep producing the smaller-displacement Sportster-spirited bike at all.
Three-tier Sport range: Nightster / Special / Sportster S £12,495 / £14,995 / £15,495 Harley's modern 'Sport' family is built off the Revolution Max platform. Nightster (£12,495) is the entry — base spec, no fairing, simpler dash. Nightster Special (£14,995) adds 4in TFT, cruise control, mini fairing, riser bars, passenger pillion. Sportster S (£15,495) jumps to 1252cc T-tune, 121bhp, more aggressive ergonomics. One platform, three buyer types.
Modern tech without pretending it isn't a Sportster Cornering ABS, ride modes, IMU The Nightster keeps the Sportster's visual cues (round headlight, fuel tank graphics, exposed dual rear shocks, side-by-side dual exhaust) but layers in modern electronics: Cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control, Drag Torque Slip Control, three ride modes. Air-cooled Sportsters never had any of this. The Nightster is what a 2026 Sportster *should* be — Harley DNA + 21st-century rider safety.
