Buell XB9R / XB12R Firebolt & XB9S / XB12S Lightning. Erik Buell's Harley-engined sportbikes.

Buell's XB-series ran 2002-2009 — XB9R Firebolt (984cc Sportster) and XB12R Firebolt (1203cc Sportster) faired sportbikes; XB9S/XB12S Lightning naked variants; XB12X Ulysses adventure variant. Erik Buell's signature designs: fuel-in-frame, ZTL perimeter front brake, mass centralisation. Killed in 2009 when Harley-Davidson shut Buell down to focus on cruisers. Cult bikes now.

What actually changed.

Buell's strange 7-year XB era · 2002-2009
Erik Buell's strange engineering 1983-2009 era Erik Buell was a Harley engineer who left HD in 1983 to build sportbikes using Harley engines. His designs were unmistakable: ZTL (Zero Torsional Load) perimeter front brake, fuel-in-frame storage (no separate tank), heavy mass centralisation philosophy. The XB-series was the peak of his solo design era — short-stroke chassis, low CofG, sharp handling.
Why Harley killed Buell 2009 cruiser focus Harley-Davidson bought 49% of Buell in 1993, full ownership 2003, then killed it in 2009 during the financial crisis. Reasoning: HD's cruiser business was the core, Buell sportbikes never made money for HD, and the recession meant cutting non-core lines. 136,923 Buells were ever made — small numbers compared to HD volumes.
Buell 1125R (2008-2009) Rotax V-twin attempt Buell tried to break dependence on the Sportster engine with the 2008 1125R — 1125cc Rotax-built liquid-cooled 72° V-twin, 146bhp claimed. Cleaner-sheet superbike. Only made for 2 model years before HD shut Buell. Rare collector item — 1125R clean used commands £6-9k in 2026.
vs new Buell (2021+) Different brand entirely New Buell launched 2021 under different ownership using surviving 1125R/1190RX engine technology. Lineup focused on Hammerhead 1190 (sport), Super-Cruiser, adventure models. Erik Buell is no longer involved. Different brand DNA — riders who loved the original XB-series are not the target market.
Real cost trajectory Held value £8,999 XB12R in 2006 (£15,100 today). Used market in 2026: XB9 (984cc) £2.5-4k, XB12 (1203cc) £3.5-5.5k, 1125R (water-cooled) £6-9k for clean low-mile. The 1125R is appreciating fast — only 2 years of production, modern engine, cult Erik Buell pedigree.
Rider aids count Minimal Buell XB-series had FI as the only rider aid — no ABS, no TC, no electronics. The 1125R briefly had ABS option for 2009. By 2026 standards minimal. But that wasn't the point — Erik Buell's bikes were about chassis design and weight philosophy, not electronics.
Cheapest way in £2.5k A clean XB9R Firebolt or XB9S Lightning from 2003-2007. 984cc Sportster-derived V-twin, ZTL perimeter brake, fuel-in-frame, that classic Buell character. Pay attention to clutch action (heavy), reg/rec, cam chain tensioner. The cheapest path to an Erik Buell-era bike. Properly undervalued in 2026.
