Late but capable
Honda was late to the mid-scrambler segment — Triumph Scrambler 800 launched 2006, Ducati Scrambler 800 launched 2014. Honda's CL500 finally arrived in 2024 with the proven CB500F engine and platform. Same 471cc parallel-twin as Rebel 500, CB500X, CBR500R, NX500.

Engine economy
Honda waited until the CB500-platform engine had been in production for 11 years (2013 launch) before adding the CL500 variant. By 2024, Honda had amortised the engine's development cost across 4 other models. Adding the CL500 was incremental cost — just bodywork and ergonomic tweaks. That's why the CL500 launched at competitive pricing.
